Freeform Pools Shaped by the Land

Organic, lagoon-like shapes with boulders, curving benches and planting that let the water settle into the yard instead of sitting on top of it.

Freeform Pool Design

Curves That Follow the Yard

A freeform pool takes its outline from the yard itself: the bend of a patio, the line of a wall, the corner where afternoon shade falls.

That makes freeform the natural choice for irregular lots, yards with mature trees, and Spanish, ranch or Tuscan homes where hard right angles would feel out of place. The curves can widen into a lounging lagoon in one spot and narrow to a swim channel in another, so one body of water handles several jobs.

Freeform pools also invite the landscape into the edges. Boulders can step down into the water, planting beds can come right to the coping, and a shallow beach or curved bench can wrap the entry. The goal is a pool that looks settled, as if the yard grew around it.

Curves still need discipline. We draw the shape in plan and in 3D so the radii flow evenly, the steps sit where people naturally walk in, and the deck stays wide enough to use. Our guide to pool shapes for Arizona yards shows how curves play out on smaller lots.

Design Details

Freeform Details Worth Planning

01

Wraparound benches

A curved bench that follows the entry gives everyone a seat in the water, and it reads beautifully when lit from below.

02

Beach and shelf entries

A gradual entry or wide sun shelf keeps small kids and loungers in shallow water while swimmers head deeper.

03

Boulder edges

Stone set at the coping or stepping into the pool blurs the line between water and landscape.

04

Rock water features

Water spilling over stacked or natural stone adds sound and suits an organic look better than a modern sheer.

05

In-pool tables

A tiled table set in shallow water turns one curve of the pool into a place to eat, play cards or watch the game.

06

Planting at the edge

Beds that meet the coping soften the outline. We choose plants that will not drop heavy litter into the water.

Tell us how your family uses the water, and we will sketch a freeform layout around it.

Organic Shapes, Arizona Realities

The curves and stone that make freeform pools feel natural also need a plan for desert conditions.

Hot stone

Boulders in full sun

Dark boulders can get too hot to touch on summer afternoons. We favor lighter stone where people sit or climb out, and save darker accent rock for spots hands and feet rarely land.

Monsoon

Beds and runoff

Beds that meet the coping can wash soil and mulch into the pool in a heavy storm. Raised edges, rock mulch and drains between bed and water keep the pool clean.

Litter

The right plants by the water

Palo verde blooms, mesquite pods and bougainvillea bracts are beautiful and messy. Near a freeform edge we lean on cleaner plants and keep heavy shedders farther back.

Caliche

Smooth curves in hard ground

Caliche can leave a curved dig ragged. The crew trims the excavation where needed so the steel follows the drawn radius and the finished shape stays smooth.

The Process

How a Freeform Pool Takes Shape

Walk the yard

At the 60-minute site visit we note trees, walls, views and where people will walk out to the water.

Sketch the curves

Your 3D design and proposal arrive within a week, showing how shape, benches and planting work together.

Select stone and finish

Boulders, coping, tile and the interior finish are selected at our studio while permits are filed.

Shape and build

Excavation, steel and shotcrete follow the drawn radii, then stone and planting finish the edges.

Freeform Pool FAQ

Questions About Curving Pools

Do freeform pools waste space compared with rectangles?

Not when the curves are used well. Wrapping a pool around a patio or tucking it into an L-shaped yard can leave more usable deck than a rectangle forced into the same space. When a lot could go either way, we compare both in 3D.

Can a freeform pool still have a deep end?

Yes. Shape and depth are separate decisions. Most freeform pools we design pair a shallow lounging area with a deeper swim or jump zone, and the curves separate the two naturally.

Are boulders safe around a pool?

They are when they are set properly. Each boulder is bedded so it cannot shift, sharp faces are turned away from where people sit, and climbing rocks are chosen with flatter tops.

Which interior finish suits a freeform pool?

Pebble and quartz finishes are popular here because their texture and natural color variation suit an organic shape. Lighter finishes give a bright blue, darker ones read like a lagoon. You can compare samples in our design studio.

Can my existing pool get a freeform makeover?

Often. The Hidden Jewel in Gilbert is a remodel: the entry was reworked with lit benches, and new paving, refreshed water features and a covered bar changed the whole yard. How far a shape can change depends on the existing shell, so start with our pool remodels page.
