Plunge Pools and Cold Plunges

Compact luxury pools for courtyards and smaller lots, plus true cold plunges for wellness routines, designed to work through an Arizona summer and winter.

Small Water, Full Experience

A Pool Sized to Your Space

A plunge pool is a small, often deeper pool built for cooling off, soaking and lounging rather than laps. In a courtyard or a compact yard, it delivers most of what people love about a pool in a fraction of the footprint.

Plunge pools suit townhome courtyards, side yards and the smaller lots in newer East Valley neighborhoods. They also suit homeowners who want more of the yard for turf, shade and dining. With a heater, a plunge can run warm in winter like an oversized spa, then cool and refreshing in spring and fall.

A cold plunge is a different tool: a smaller basin held cold for short, deliberate soaks. In Arizona that takes dedicated chilling equipment, because summer heat warms ground and water alike. Many clients pair one with a hot spa so they can move between the two.

With so little water, details matter more. Built-in benches, a tanning step, a sheer descent and good lighting make a compact pool feel finished, and Pentair automation keeps temperature and filtration on a schedule you manage from your phone. Design Details

Making a Small Pool Feel Generous

01

Benches on every side

Built-in seating lets a plunge pool host a group, and each bench doubles as a step for easy entry.

02

A raised wall

Lifting one side adds a place to lean, softens equipment noise and can carry a sheer descent or scupper.

03

Depth where it counts

A deeper center makes cooling off feel real, while a shallow ledge gives a place to sit with shoulders in the sun.

04

Hot and cold zones

A cold plunge beside a heated spa puts contrast soaking a few steps apart instead of a drive across town.

05

Shade overhead

A pergola, ramada or tree on the west side keeps a small body of water from overheating in July.

06

Finishes up close

In a small pool every tile is in view. Glass mosaic, stone coping and a quality interior make it feel crafted.

Built for Arizona

Small Pools, Big Temperature Swings

Less water means faster changes in temperature and chemistry, which shapes how a plunge is equipped.

Summer heat

Keeping a cold plunge cold

Arizona summers warm water well past what anyone wants for a cold soak. A true cold plunge needs a chiller sized for that heat, insulation where possible and a cover between uses.

Winter nights

Warm water in January

Desert winter nights can drop close to freezing. A heater lets a plunge serve as a soaking pool in the cool months, and freeze protection keeps water moving on the coldest nights.

Chemistry

Small volume, fast changes

A few bathers, a dust storm or a hot week shift chemistry quickly in a small pool. Automated sanitizing and scheduled filtration keep the water steady.

Hard water

Scale shows up close

In a compact pool you sit right at the waterline. Glass or porcelain tile resists calcium scale and cleans more easily than porous stone.

The Process

From Courtyard to Cool Water

Measure the space

At the site visit we check dimensions, equipment access and how close the plunge can sit to walls and the house.

Choose warm, cold or both

Heating or chilling equipment is matched to how you plan to use the water in each season.

Design and permit

Your 3D design and proposal arrive within a week, and we handle permits, engineering and barrier rules.

Build and start up

Steel, shell, plumbing, tile, finish and equipment go in, then the water is filled, balanced and started.

Plunge Pool FAQ

Questions About Plunges

What is the difference between a plunge pool and a spa?

A spa is built for hot soaking with jets and seats. A plunge pool is usually larger than a spa and smaller than a standard pool, built for cooling off and lounging, though it can be heated in winter. Many plunge pools borrow spa-style benches.

Can a cold plunge stay cold through an Arizona summer?

With a properly sized chiller, insulation and a cover, yes. Without dedicated chilling, a plunge runs as warm as the air and ground around it, which in July is anything but cold.

Does a plunge pool need a permit and a safety barrier?

In most cases, yes. A plunge pool is a pool under city codes, so expect a building permit, HOA review where it applies and Arizona barrier requirements. We handle the paperwork.

Will a plunge pool fit my small backyard?

Often, yes. Plunge pools fit courtyards and side yards that cannot take a full pool, though excavation access and setbacks from walls and the house still matter. We confirm both at the site visit.

Can I use a plunge pool year-round?

With heating, yes. Many owners keep a plunge cool from spring through fall and warm in winter, and Pentair automation lets you change the temperature from your phone so the water is ready when you are.
