Can You Add Smart Automation to an Existing Arizona Pool?

October 22, 2026 · 5-minute read

Yes, smart automation can often be added to an existing Arizona pool. The right approach depends on the pump, heater, valves, wiring and controls already installed. Some pools can use an upgrade kit; others need a new control system or compatible equipment. An equipment-pad inspection comes before a compatibility promise or a quote.

What Smart Automation Actually Means

Automation is a control layer, not a different pool. It is the app and touchscreen interface that lets you run pumps, heater, lighting and water features from your phone instead of adjusting each compatible device at the equipment pad. We build and retrofit exclusively on Pentair systems through the Pentair Pool app. Cleaning and water chemistry are a separate layer, covered further down, and the two get confused often enough that it is worth splitting them apart early.

Start With What Is Already on the Pad

Before anyone names a controller, the equipment pad gets a real look: the pump, heater, valve actuators and any existing control box, plus their age and condition. Pentair lists different IntelliCenter upgrade kits for specified EasyTouch and IntelliTouch systems, including separate groups for systems manufactured before and after 2012. That is not a promise that every older pool can use a kit. The installer needs to match the model, enclosure and pool or pool-and-spa configuration to the correct hardware.

What a Retrofit Can Typically Add

With compatible equipment and the right controller, you can bring pump schedules, heating, pool or spa lighting, and water features together under one app. The exact functions depend on the installed devices and their connections. Pentair also lists guest-mode and remote-monitoring features for IntelliCenter. Ask which functions are included in your proposed setup, what network connection they need, and what your installer can access with your permission.

Automation Versus Cleaning and Water Care

These are two different systems people tend to lump together. Automation is the scheduling and remote-control layer. Cleaning and water care are the physical equipment that actually keeps the pool clear: an in-floor system with pop-up heads built into the shell, a robotic cleaner on its own schedule, or a salt chlorine generator producing sanitizer from salt already in the water. Some compatible cleaning or sanitizing equipment can be managed through automation; other devices use separate controls. Confirm each model rather than assuming every robotic cleaner or salt system will appear in the same app. Automation does not replace cleaning, water testing or chemical adjustment. A cleaning upgrade is a separate piece of equipment, best specified during the same visit so both systems work together.

Why a Licensed Installer Handles the Wiring

Pentair markets its IntelliCenter upgrade kits through dealers. A retrofit is not just an app download: it connects to electrical and control wiring at the equipment pad. Getting the model match or wiring wrong creates avoidable problems. Use a qualified, appropriately licensed professional to confirm what the equipment can support and make the connections. We do not recommend DIY wiring on this equipment.

What to Expect When You Call

We look at the equipment pad first, in person, before recommending anything. From there we confirm which Pentair components can stay, which should be replaced, and lay out the control options that fit what is already there, built around your actual pool rather than a generic package. If a cleaning upgrade makes sense too, we fold it into the same plan.

Smart Automation Questions, Answered

Can automation really be added to a pool that has no smart features today?
Often, yes, but a pool without existing automation may need a new control system rather than an upgrade kit. We inspect the pump, heater, valves, electrical supply and controls before recommending a compatible setup.
Does my current pump or heater need to already be a Pentair product?
Not necessarily, but compatibility is model-specific. We specify Pentair automation and check the manufacturer requirements for each pump, heater and accessory. Some existing equipment may remain; other equipment may need replacement. Brand alone does not answer the compatibility question.
How do I know if a Pentair automation kit is compatible with my existing system?
Compatibility depends on the specific model, enclosure and configuration. Pentair lists different upgrade kits for specified older systems. A qualified installer should check those requirements before choosing hardware.
Can I install a pool automation upgrade myself?
Use a qualified, appropriately licensed professional for electrical and control connections. Pentair offers the upgrade kits through dealers, and the correct hardware depends on the existing system. Do not treat an automation retrofit as a DIY wiring project.
What is the difference between automation and cleaning or water care?
Automation provides schedules and app access for compatible pumps, heating, lighting and water features. Cleaning and water care use separate equipment, such as a robotic cleaner or salt chlorine generator. Automation does not replace that equipment, water testing or routine care.
Can I control everything by voice once it is installed?
Do not assume voice control is included. Support depends on the system and software version. Confirm the currently supported app, touchscreen and optional control features for your proposed setup before purchasing.

The Short Version

An existing pool does not have to be rebuilt just to explore smarter controls. Start with an equipment assessment, a written list of compatible functions and a clear explanation of anything that needs replacement.
